IVAN
BEAUFILS
MUSICIAN & MUSIC MEDIAtOr

As a singer, pianist and choir conductor, Ivan Beaufils expresses music — sometimes finely tuned, sometimes freely improvised, but always guided by a spirit of play and experimentation. His diverse artistic activities extend beyond the classical canon’s boundaries. In blending tradition and experimentation, he challenges stereotypical expectations, inviting his audience to experience music from fresh perspectives. As a countertenor, he explores a space that reconsiders classical music conventions and opens new realms. As a music facilitator, he cultivates social and creative environments where spontaneity and intuitive expression flourish through interdisciplinary and improvisational elements, nurturing a collective musical experience that both connects and inspires.
ABOUT

How I experience music
Music is everywhere; music unites.
Through music, we form a connection with ourselves and our environment. It evokes emotions and creates social spaces. At the same time, music is always a snapshot in time, and with an open mindset, it can be realised and experienced in any setting. This focus on the moment, its uniting quality, and its unpredictability hold so much potential—the reason why I’m drawn to working with groups and exploring diverse genres, including improvisation and experimental music. Embracing music at the present moment allows for beautiful discoveries. One dives deeply into the music, engaging with oneself and one’s environment, sharing something intimate and beyond words through personal creative ideas—something that unites us in that instant moment. Sharing and awakening this creative energy in others is a true passion of mine.
My Artistic Focus
A bit of everything.
It’s hard to specify my focus as an artist. Because of my varied interests, I could never choose a single path and have always pursued a bit of everything. Today, I traverse multiple styles—from classical to jazz and pop—as a singer, pianist, improviser, composer, and choir conductor. My aim is to explore the diverse layers of music, creating new, experimental, and social spaces. I am always open to new ideas and especially passionate about alternative concert formats, unique performance settings, and interdisciplinary projects. From classical song recitals with queer-feminist repertoire to large-scale interdisciplinary works involving the audience, the possibilities are endless.
My Artistic Journey
Music, my lifelong companion.
My artistic journey began at age six, when I started piano lessons. But it was my early experiences in musical theater that fueled my passion for music. By nine, I was regularly performing on the “big stage” with the Vienna State Opera’s children’s choir, experiencing the vibrant world of theater from an early age. I was fascinated by how everything came together through collaboration across various fields, and enchanted by the distinct atmosphere of the theater, with its special moments of shared excitement. After my first performance, I knew I wanted to pursue my passion for music professionally and share it with others. Years of lessons in piano, voice and composition, a scholarship from the Vienna State Opera to support young singers, and numerous performances led me to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MdW) in 2018. My studies there have included intensive training in classical voice, piano, and choir conducting, with additional focuses in jazz and pop vocals as well as jazz piano. I have always been drawn to musical diversity and wanted to maintain flexibility across different fields and genres, both artistically and pedagogically.
Current Projects
Since 2025, I have been working in the Community & Outreach department at the Vienna State Opera, where we continuously develop new, participatory programs. From cross-generational productions and creative collaborations with school classes to interventions in public spaces and even parties at the opera house, our activities are aimed at children, teens, and adults, with the goal of opening up the Vienna State Opera and NEST even further.
Beyond that, I am the musical director of Subchor, a Vienna-based pop choir that is organised collaboratively. We sing adaptations of both well-known and underrated hits from different eras and styles. The choir is open to everyone: no audition or prior singing experience is required – though the waiting list has grown long!
In 2025, I also founded resonance.lab, a community project exploring resonance as a social phenomenon and a feeling of connection through vocal improvisation and transdisciplinary approaches. The project runs as an open monthly workshop series.
As a singer, arranger and composer, I occasionally design and perform my own concerts – sometimes blending classical and pop, sometimes in unexpected settings, while engaging with current social topics.
